Mar. 25th, 2012 09:39 pmName: Dr. (René) Facilier
Canon Origin/Series: The Princess and the Frog
Teaching Position: Muggle Magic
Gender: Male
Age: 37
Out of school living location: Évry, Essonne, France
Blood status: Muggleborn
Personality: Facilier presents himself as a charasmatic, charming, and smooth man. He seems quite easy to trust to most, but in truth, he's a trickster and gifted plotter; very clever. He uses others' insecurities and desires to tempt them into deals that have highly unexpected (albeit technically as-promsied) results. He can be quite nasty and manipulative when he wants to be. Facilier is very bitter, due (presumably, at least, in canon) to an unpriveledged life. He resents those who are better off thanks to money, race, magical ability, or anything else. He is highly driven by a desire to move up in life.
However, despite his the cool, calm, and calculating nature, Facilier can come unwraveled in anger or fear. He is very difficult to unwravel in anger, though, but when he does, he is unforgiving and vengance-sicking. Again, though, he would be too wary of his plans as a teacher to ever harm a student physically, although he might do a bit of phsychological damage if he could. When he unwravels in fear, which, on the other hand, is a bit easier, he becomes panicky, pleading, and desperate, not at all the fearless man he tries to present himself as.
Background (AU!Canon; HP): René Facilier was born to a poor muggle family in New Orleans, Louisianna. René started life as a happy enough boy, but that went south when, at a young age, he began being mistreated based on his race and poverty. René decided then that if he wanted to get anywhere in life, he'd need to at least make more money. But how?
Well, in New Orleans, there was exposure to so much cultural richness, including voodoo witch doctors and Tarot card readers. René was interested in such practices, and figured they might be a way not only to make money, but to gain power and respect through unique abilities and having sway over others. He began observing and learning.
During his years of discovering these arts, he recieved a letter informing him that he had magical potential, and was invited to a Wizarding school in the states. This actually explained a lot to René, who had discovered that odd things sometimes happened in accordance with his desires, but his parents -- who already didn't approve of his hobbies -- were very doubtful. Besides, they reasoned, there simply wasn't money to send René away to school. René was furious, but had no choice in the matter.
However, he not only continued practicing voodoo and the like, but he tried to master his natural magical gifts. His success was generally limited, but he did find that his magical abilities improved his skill in "muggle magic".
When he was twenty-three, René, by then a skilled voodoo Doctor, decided to leave New Orleans to find a place where his skills were less common and, as such, in higher demand. He ended up in Évry, Essonne, in France. However, he wasn't doing as well as he thought he would, leaving him even more frustrated and bitter.
And then, the spring when he was thirty-seven, things all turned around when René was invited to teach his "muggle magic" at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This seemed like the start of a brilliant thing to René. He could gain the fame and recognition he deserved through teaching, and once that happened, he'd be able to easily achieve the money and thus, the power, he so craved.
